BiteMap is a fishing map app: it shows real catches and documented species data on a map,
lets you log your own catches, and helps you identify fish. This page explains exactly what
the app collects, why, and who it's shared with — in plain language, matched to what the app
actually does today.
1Information we collect
We collect only what the app needs to work. Here's everything, mapped to the feature that needs it:
Account info
Email address and the username you choose, when you create an account. Signing in isn't required to use the map.
Location
Your device's GPS location, only if you grant permission. See section 2 for exactly how this is used.
Catches you log
Species, count, size, bait, notes, a spot name you choose, where and when you logged it, and whether you marked it public or private.
Social graph
Who you follow and who follows you. This is tied to your username, not your email.
Membership status
Whether you have an active pass and when it expires. We never see your card number — Apple handles payment directly and only tells us the result.
Advertising identifiers
Not currently collected. BiteMap ships with an ads SDK (Google AdMob) for a future optional rewarded-video feature, but no ads are shown yet — see section 4.
2Location data
Location is the one category that deserves its own explanation, since it's the most sensitive thing the app touches.
The map uses your location to center itself on where you are and find nearby catches and species records. If you decline location access, the map falls back to a general sample area instead.
Logging a catch attempts to attach your location so it can appear on the map. This happens regardless of whether you mark the catch public or private.
Private catches keep their location — marking a catch private stops it from appearing on the public map to other users, but the location is still stored so it appears correctly in your own journal.
We do not track your location in the background. It's only read at the moment the map loads or a catch is logged.
3How we use it
To show the heat map — blending your public catches with everyone else's and with documented species-occurrence data from public science sources (USGS/GBIF).
To run your personal journal and stats.
To power the follow graph and friends' catch feed.
To determine what your account is entitled to (free vs. an active pass).
To keep the app secure and prevent abuse of shared data like the species database.
We do not use your data to build an advertising profile of you today, and we do not sell it to anyone, ever.
4Who we share it with
BiteMap is a small app and deliberately keeps its list of data processors short:
Supabase — our database and authentication provider. It stores your account, catches, and social graph on our behalf and does not use your data for its own purposes.
Apple — handles any in-app purchases directly. We receive only the entitlement result (e.g. "lifetime pass active"), never your payment details.
Google AdMob — the app includes this SDK for a planned rewarded-video feature (watch a short video to unlock more of the map). No ads are active as of this policy's effective date. Once enabled, AdMob may collect device and advertising identifiers to serve and measure video ads; you'll be able to opt out of personalized ads through your device's system settings, and this policy will be updated when that feature ships.
Public catches, usernames, and follow relationships are visible to other users of the app by design — that's how the map and social features work. Your email address is never shown to other users.
5Keeping & deleting your data
You can delete individual catches at any time from your Journal — this removes them immediately.
You can delete your entire account from inside the app: open Profile and tap
Delete account. This takes effect immediately — there is no waiting period and
no need to contact us first.
Deleting your account permanently removes your login, your profile and username, your
follower and following connections, and your block list. Catches you chose to share publicly
stay on the map, but are unlinked from you first: they become anonymous data points with no
account, username, or personal information attached, and can no longer be traced back to you.
We keep them because other anglers' map results depend on them. This cannot be undone.
If you'd rather not use the in-app button, email
bitemapsupport@gmail.com from the address on your
account and we'll do it for you within 7 business days.
6Children's privacy
BiteMap is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal
information from children under 13. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us
and we'll delete it.
7Your rights & choices
Location can be denied or revoked any time in your device's Settings — the app keeps working with a sample map area instead.
Public vs. private is your choice on every catch you log, set at the moment you save it.
Access or correction — email us and we'll help you review or fix any data we hold about you.
If this policy changes in a way that affects what we collect or how we use it — most likely
when the rewarded-video ad feature goes live — we'll update the effective date at the top of
this page and, for material changes, notify users in the app.
